Goh Ballet's The Nutcracker

The Winter holiday season brings a few versions of this famous classical story by Peter Tchaikovsky. The Goh Ballet presented their interpretation at the Centre in Vancouver for the Performing Arts between December 15 and 18.

Only two brief encounters with Louise Lecavalier/FouGlorieux on November 4 and 5, definitely feel not enough.

         Yet, the few of us who were privileged enough to see the dance performance of Children & A Few Minutes of Lock, will definitely not forget it for some time. "Splendid" would be the one word phrase I would have to choose to describe it, but it is so much more than that...

Dance Marathon

Slowly but surely, dubstep is inching itself into the mainstream.  Thanks to the producing skills of Kode 9, Benga and Hatcha, the genre is making a name for itself on dancefloors around the world. Vancouver has a burgeoning dubstep scene led in part by the Lighta! crew of DubForms, and an array of other local producers and DJs.

Double Story

It's hard to expect anything less than stunning dancing from Crystal Pite and Richard Siegal and they don't disappoint in their latest collaboration, Double Story. Pite and Siegal used to dance with Ballett Frankfurt under the direction of the venerable choreographer William Forsythe. However, Double Story pays only moderate tribute to ballet while drawing extensively from contact improvisation, wrestling technique, and other unusual forms that could only have come from Siegal and Pite's exquisitely creative bodies.
