Episode 9: Sandra Lockwood

This week, we have a very special episode.

The goal of this show has been to shine a light on some of the more lesser known and obscure records, tapes, and sometimes, CDs in CJSFs music archive. In starting this show, I found that I was frequently coming across albums from artists and bands with sometimes no public information about them or the music I was listening to.

My curiosity to find out more eventually led me to reaching out to Grunt Gallery, a local art gallery here in Vancouver that seemed to have worked with some of the artists featured in the CJSF archives. Thanks to Grunt Gallery’s own archivist, Dan Pon, I was able to learn so much more about some of these artists, and while doing so, he let me know about another artist from the 1990s whose work could be found in the Grunt Gallery Archives. This is someone who had done some performances with the gallery, released an album in 1994, but from what I could find, hadn’t publicly put out any music since. I searched her up in the CJSF database, and was surprised to find her CD from that time, titled “Shell”. As soon as I gave her music a listen, I knew that I needed to share it on Analog Archives.

This artist is Sandra Lockwood. Thanks to Dan Pon, I was able to get in contact with her and ask if she would like to speak with me about her music from that time.

She kindly agreed, and we met at CJSF for an interview.

During our conversation, we spoke on the album’s production background, including the contributions of Scott henderson, a local figure in the Vancouver Punk scene at the time. We also talked about some of what she’s been up to since, and her thoughts on the album, 31 years after its release.

The structure of the episode will consist of interview excerpts that transition to songs from the album “Shell” being discussed.

Thank you to Dan Pon, the CJSF team, and of course, Sandra Lockwood, for making this episode possible.

Episode 1: Who is Emily Faryna? + rushingfloodperfume by Mass

This week, Danny does a deep dive on Vancouver artist Emily Faryna’s 1990 tape, “Return of the Repressed”.

Second half of the show is dedicated to UK punk band, Mass, and their 1991 album, “rushingfloodperfume”. From what was found, they never released another full length album. Why?
